Old corn rows peek out between the remains of snow, willows glow gold, as the sap begins to flow. There is a faint shimmer of colour everywhere, as life stirs just below the surface, waiting for spring.

Down the side road, by the corn maze, there is an odd little hill, a glacial remnant, and a reminder of why this land is so fertile. Glacial till deposited as the drumlin was formed by the melting ice, is some of the richest soil in Canada. Soil that feeds cities and industry that in turn devours the very soil that made them possible.

I drive past this vista regularly, there’s a rutted farm track that goes through the fields. The land tells tales of retreating glacial flood waters, followed by forests then farms. These fields are zoned industrial use and one by one they’re disappearing under concrete and asphalt, how do we balance intelligent development with future need, in a hungry world?

Not far off the beaten track of the 401 super highway, a rural road winds past farmsteads and villages, a welcome respite from the City that nibbles at the lands around it. Veracious in it's appetite, will the City snatch these lands into it's maw as so many already devoured?  The zoning change has already taken place, the clock is ticking...

This remnant of rural life harkens back to a time when family farms dominated the landscape. Now  surrounded by developing subdivisions, this bit of history is  safe only until it becomes worth the work of flattening the rolling landscape.  I record it while I can.
