I am a contemporary Canadian landscape artist. I'm a visual story teller engaged in a mad race against time. recording disappearing pre-urbanized landscapes, as cities swallow land in fertile temperate zones. Treeline

Treeline

At a gentle separation, of field and field, or crop and crop,  a treeline waves. Far friendlier than a fence, and a place for the wildlings to travel to, from and along, these poplars, maple, and sometimes evergreens are green punctuation marks upon the landscape.

Swirls

Swirls

Across undulating hills the tractors dance, in their wake the soil swirls with lines and rhythms that catch the artists eye.  Patterns in the earth like visual music accentuate the landscape

Tor

                                                                           Tor

Tor, Celtic hill fort, an ancient place of safety, now a place of peace and dreams, surrounded by fields of wild daffodils, and grazing sheep.  If only all battle grounds could be this way.

Across the Field

Across The Field

Distant silos beckon the weary farmer home, not just  storage, but a beacon too, standing tall amongst the trees and crops, a guide at the end on a long hard day.

Road To The Lake

Road To The Lake

Taking the back roads to Tobermory to catch the Chi-cheemaun is for many Ontarians a summer tradition. All roads lead to the lake, and good memories.

Pastoral

Pastoral

Mamas and babies, caught my eye, laying together, but separately, in the warm early fall sunshine.
This peaceful scene is just minutes from the 401, a busy multi lane highway and zoned for commercial development...

Summer Days

Summer Days
Country roads on summer days, bring  memories of road trips spent watching the land slip by on our way to our holiday destinations.

Into The Hills

Into The Hills
Hills dip down to the road, furrows wrinkle their brows, and trees dressed for autumn adorn their crests, but wait what's that...a sold for development sign. I'm so sad that where once rolling hills, a small pond and trees dwelled, resides a factory. Is this really progress?

Waiting for Spring

 Waiting For Spring
Old corn rows peek out between the remains of snow, willows glow gold, as the sap begins to flow. There is a faint shimmer of colour everywhere, as life stirs just below the surface, waiting for spring.

Drumlin

Drumlin
Down the side road, by the corn maze, there is an odd little hill, a glacial remnant, and a reminder of why this land is so fertile. Glacial till deposited as the drumlin was formed by the melting ice, is some of the richest soil in Canada. Soil that feeds cities and industry that in turn devours the very soil that made them possible.

Hamilton Rd Undulations

copyright Robin Baratta, Hamilton Rd Undulations
Hamilton Rd Undulations
I drive past this vista regularly, there’s a rutted farm track that goes through the fields. The land tells tales of retreating glacial flood waters, followed by forests then farms. These fields are zoned industrial use and one by one they’re disappearing under concrete and asphalt, how do we balance intelligent development with future need, in a hungry world?

Into The Distance

Into The Distance
Some times the fields seem to go on as far as the eye can see, an illusion of straight fence lines, and undulating land.

Green and Gold

Not far off the beaten track of the 401 super highway, a rural road winds past farmsteads and villages, a welcome respite from the City that nibbles at the lands around it. Veracious in it's appetite, will the City snatch these lands into it's maw as so many already devoured?  The zoning change has already taken place, the clock is ticking...

Corn As High As An Elephants Eye

On a hot summer day, as we wind our way down country roads a line from an old musical keeps running through our mind...

Pump House

This remnant of rural life harkens back to a time when family farms dominated the landscape. Now  surrounded by developing subdivisions, this bit of history is  safe only until it becomes worth the work of flattening the rolling landscape.  I record it while I can.

Corn and Beans

Corn and Beans, behind the farm market, rolling hills cloaked in crops, undulate their way toward a sugar bush, both are productive and beautiful.
